Today’s [not so] inane images of the day:

After almost 4 years of medical school and 4 agonizing days of waiting during Match Week, I was rewarded with my #1 rank – Henry Ford Transitional Year + Massachusetts General Anesthesiology!

My match result still hasn’t settled in. Despite having an entire weekend to wrap my mind around the fact that I matched at my #1 Transitional Year and Anesthesiology Residency programs, I cannot help but wonder when someone will wake me up from this pleasant dream.

OUWB Match Day Recap

My plan for the morning was to take my time getting ready and then enjoy a leisurely brunch at Toast in Birmingham with Mike. A little before 12:30PM, we met my parents at the Townsend for the official OUWB Match Day event. Literally everyone from every stage of our training was there to cheer us on – our entire Dean’s team, admissions team, clerkship directors, clinical faculty, student affairs staff members and PRISM mentors. All of us mingled outside of the ballroom for a bit before heading in for the big reveal.

Once we were in the ballroom, we went to find our PRISM mentors. Some time after 12:30PM, Dr. Nuzzarello picked up the microphone and asked that our mentors retrieve the envelopes. My mentor – Dr. Ngo – handed me my envelope, and I retreated back to Mike and my family. After Dr. Nuzzarello confirmed that each of us had an envelope in hand, we counted down together and collectively ripped them open.

All week, I had been bracing myself to accept matching at a lower ranked program. Mike and I had far too many conversations about ending up in every corner of the U.S. and how I would feel about those results. Although there were times that I fantasized about matching into the Anesthesiology Residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, I never thought in my wildest dreams that it could be a reality. When I opened the envelope and looked at my result, I went into shock. I felt my hands trembling as I felt a mixture excitement and disbelief wash over me.

Soon after we opened our envelopes, the OUWB Match Day list was passed out. Needless to say, I’m very proud of how well our class did.

I’ll be updating in the coming weeks with much more about my application experience, interview season and finally deciding on my rank list! In the meantime, I’m going to take some time to convince myself that this is real life!
